One of my favorite ways to thicken smoothies is by adding a handful of rolled oats. This high fiber mixed berry smoothie is a delicious and nourishing way to start your day, or keep you fueled through the day.

Disclosure: thanks so much to Farmers Direct Co-op for sponsoring this post. As always, all opinions are my own.

I don’t know when it started, but I’ve been adding a handful of oats to my smoothies for a couple years now. They’ve got a neutral flavor, and great bulking properties to bulk up your smoothies as well as your, ahem, your poo. So it’s great for texture and for bowel health. Oats are beneficial for a number of reasons, and they’re one of the easiest ways to include a few more whole grains into your diet because they’re naturally whole grain and can be eaten raw (like in this mixed berry smoothie) or cooked for breakfast really quickly.

You think all oats are created equally, they may taste similarly, but one thing that stuck out to me about these Farmers Direct Co-op oats is the fact that their quick cooking oats, that are just cut into smaller pieces than their old fashioned counterpart, still resemble oats. They’re not cut so small that they’re mostly dust and crumbly. I like that their rolled oats are just a bit thicker than others I’ve had, and they maintain their oat integrity better than others I’ve tried. Plus they maintain a few practices that are sustainable and transparent that I really connect to. As someone who likes to support brands that have causes and practices that I respect, I am so excited to have found Farmers Direct Co-op, that does things like this:

  • They redesigned the lot-numbering system used to trace packaged food products back through the plants and the farms that handled and grew them. This enables FDC products to be fully traceable with a very high degree of confidence and transparency. This means that customers have proof that Mother Nature approves of everything that happened to it along the way. It’s often referred to as provenance, which refers to a record of ownership of something, used as guide to authenticity or quality. Provenance is cutting edge in agriculture today — and Farmer Direct Co-op is literally one of the only companies in the world that has it.
  • It’s 100% farmer owned
  • They grow Fair Trade foods. This means that workers are paid living wages & working conditions are safe. In a world where poverty is rampant, and people are taken advantage of based on where they live or that they weren’t afforded similar opportunities as I was, this is something I believe in and want to support.
  • Organic Farming + Fair Trade = Fair Deal standards

Long story short, I can stand by and want to support their social and environmental commitments.

OK, let’s get to the recipe…

I’m definitely a fan of oats in smoothies, sometimes I throw in a spoonful of psyllium husk instead. Your mixed berry smoothie sounds delicious!
